Arai helmets

The focus on safety is characteristic of Arai through the years of existence of the brands. The company founder, Hirotake Arai, was a milliner, but also an avid motorcyclist. The family business is run by 3 generations of Arai, who all have the same goal: to make the best possible helmet. Pick up any Arai, and you'll immediately feel the craftsmanship of the fully handcrafted helmet. The name of the craftsman who made the helmet is handwritten on the inside of the outer shell of all Arai helmets.

In the 1950s there were no helmet manufacturers in Japan and since Japan was a closed market it was very difficult to get a good helmet. No legal standards, no manufacturers but Hirotake Arai knew he wanted a good helmet for his own safety and later for some friends too. It was the beginning of Arai as a helmet manufacturer. He then had to develop his own testing standards and testing equipment, as no legal standards existed. As a hatter, he knew that people all have different heads, so there was a need for a perfect helmet fit.

Why an Arai helmet?

It is important to note that Hirotake Arai's intention was not to start another commercial business, but to make helmets that could protect his fellow riders. It is this drive that remains within the Arai company to this day.

An Arai helmet is completely handmade, from the best materials, to produce a helmet that is as safe and comfortable as possible. The base of the round outer shell consists of super fiber material (supplemented with Kevlar, Nylon and carbon), the fibers of which are injected onto a mould. The loose fibers stick criss-cross together, creating a much stiffer and harder shell than with a woven fiber material.

Although many helmets nowadays have angular lines in the outer shell, an Arai helmet is actually always round. The angular shape may look tough, but the round shape of an Arai helmet has a reason: a smooth helmet has a much smaller chance of getting caught behind an obstacle during a fall or slide.

Arai's mission is to make the safest and most comfortable motorcycle helmet. It is also for this reason that they really see the ECE and SNELL label requirements as a minimum, and not as a goal. Such a quality mark is there to ensure that a helmet meets the minimum safety requirements.

At Biker Outfit we present the Arai SZ-R Vas jet helmet. This Arai motorcycle helmet is extremely popular with urban riders of motorcycles and motor scooters. Like the Arai full-face helmets, the handmade SZ-R Vas is intended for motorcyclists who are willing to spend more on best quality helmets.
