If you are looking for a 100% waterproof motorcycle jacket, it's in your best interest to choose a jacket with a Gore-Tex membrane. Brands like Alpinestars, REV'IT! and Dainese all work with Gore-Tex. In addition to the fact that Gore-Tex provides a completely waterproof motorcycle jacket, the membrane is also known for its breathability. With low temperatures it is important to wear a warm motorcycle jacket. A motorcycle jacket with a separate thermal lining is ideal for motorcyclists who ride their motorbikes throughout the winter.
The majority of motorcycle jackets are made of leather or textile. Both materials have their own advantages. Leather is more durable than textile, offers the most protection and is therefore very suitable for use on the track. It's not a coincidence that motorcycle racers always wear a full leather motorcycle suit. A sporty, leather motorcycle jacket has a tight fit and over time it will form to the shape of your body. Casual, leather motorcycle jackets are often a bit looser.

It depends on your riding style. Leather is the most abrasion-resistant option and offers the highest level of protection, making it a favourite on the track and among sport riders. Textile jackets are more flexible and comfortable and often come with practical extras such as a removable liner, additional pockets and a waterproof membrane. This makes textile jackets a popular choice for commuting and long touring rides.
Most motorcycle jackets come with standard protectors on the shoulders and elbows. A back protector is often optional: the jacket is designed to accommodate one, and sometimes one is included. The rest of the jacket is made from abrasion-resistant material to protect your skin in the event of a fall.
Since 2018, motorcycle clothing has been tested according to the European EN 17092 standard and classified as Class A, AA or AAA. These ratings can be found on the CE label inside the jacket. All three offer abrasion protection, but they are designed for different types of use. AAA provides the highest level of protection and is intended for sporty and intensive riding at higher speeds, often at the expense of some extra weight and reduced ventilation. AA is the versatile middle ground, offering a good balance between protection and comfort, making it ideal for touring and everyday use. A is lighter and more comfortable, making it suitable for city riding and shorter journeys. Choose the rating that best matches how and where you ride most often.
Many textile motorcycle jackets feature a waterproof membrane, such as Gore-Tex, which keeps you dry in the rain while remaining breathable. Not every jacket has this membrane, so check the specifications of each model. If you frequently ride in the rain or commute by motorcycle, choosing a jacket with a waterproof membrane is a sensible option. Some jackets also feature a removable rain liner, making them more versatile.
For warm days, you can choose a lightweight, ventilated jacket that lets the airflow from riding keep you cool. If you ride all year round, a jacket with a removable thermal liner is ideal: keep the liner in when it's cold and remove it when temperatures rise. For winter rides, also look for a waterproof membrane.
